What is a Multi-Split Air Conditioner System?

Jan 19, 2021

A multi-split air conditioner is a system with several indoor outlets, all attached to one outdoor compressor.

This connection is through refrigerant lines, rather than cumbersome ducting. The indoor outlets are connected to the outdoor unit via condensate drain lines and power cables.

A multi-split AC works in the same way as a single split AC, by using a heat pump to absorb or disperse heat.

Is a Multi-Split Heat AC the Best Option for Me?

Multi-split air conditioning is ideal for any property where you need more control over the heat in individual rooms. This might be at home, where everyone has different ideas of what makes a comfortable temperature, or in any space where some rooms are used more than others.

You’ll find many multi-split ACs have smart features like motion sensors, WiFi connectivity, ionisers, or air purifiers. These sorts of features mean you can tailor your environment to be just as you want it, as well as controlling your energy usage.

You can choose different types of unit to create your multi-split air conditioning system, perhaps opting for a high capacity unit in frequently used rooms like living areas or kitchens and a smaller, quieter unit for bedrooms.

This level of flexibility is a real plus for the multi-split heat AC system. You can have up to five individual outlets, all from one outdoor compressor, and all controlled by one remote.

Environmentally-Responsible Choice

Another big positive of a multi-split air conditioning unit is its energy-saving credentials.

Being able to heat or cool rooms individually means no wasted energy, plus being able to tailor the size of the unit to the size of the room means properly cooled air and maximum energy efficiency.

Multi-split air conditioners are one of the most energy-efficient AC systems around, which is great news for the environment as well as your pocket.

What are the Downsides?

Even a system as good as the multi-split air conditioner can have its downsides. Care needs to be taken to choose the right capacity to avoid wasting energy.

It’s also important to consider placement; the outdoor compressor needs to be as close as practical to the interior units for effective performance. Compressors can also be a bit on the bulky side, so it’s important to put them somewhere where their less-than-pretty appearance won’t affect your (or your neighbours’) enjoyment of outside spaces.
