What's the Most Energy-Efficient AC Temperature?

Jul 20, 2021

When you use an air conditioner, one of the first things you focus on to make sure it's at its best is the temperature. This can be very easily done, and your house will be cool and breathable in no time at all.

However, reaching the perfect temperature for you can often come with a high level of energy inefficiency, which can lead to you racking up energy bills that you don't need.

Read on to find out more about the energy efficiency of different temperatures, what can affect the temperature that is most efficient for you, and which temperature can be best for you and your bank account.

Humidity

A lot of what you believe is heat can come from the humidity of the environment that you're in. For example, dry heat can feel significantly cooler than if the environment you're in is especially humid, with a significant amount of moisture in the air.

This is because the moisture in the air can stop your sweat from evaporating, keeping it on your body as another insulating layer that ultimately heats you up. Your ideal efficient temperature may have to adapt to this, as a much more humid environment would require your air conditioning turned down even lower for you to feel the positive effect.

Of course, this changes if your unit can adjust the humidity, but it's something to keep in mind.

Comfortable Temperatures

The ideal temperature in the summer tends to be from 21 to 23 degrees celsius. This is the right temperature to be comfortable in and still ensures that you don't use too much energy. This is shown in the shift from a typical winter temperature, which would ideally sit at around 17°.

Your air conditioner will still do less work, all whilst making sure that you are happy and as comfortable as can be throughout the summer months.

Personal Taste

Whilst 21-23°C is the most energy-efficient temperature, it may not be the one that's right for you. We all have different tastes and preferences when it comes to how we like our home, and 21°C might be far too cold for someone trying to make the most of their summer.

Not to worry, you can still find energy efficiency savings with your unit. Using it on a consistent basis can make it more efficient due to the lack of mould build-up damaging the system, and replacing your filter as often as possible is a surefire way to make sure that your air conditioner stays in the most efficient state possible.
