Why Won't My Air Conditioner Turn On?

June 7, 2022

On a hot day, you might dream of two things: a cold drink and an air conditioner. But what happens when your air conditioning unit just won’t turn on, is there any way to fix it? At Jervis Bay Air Conditioning, we’re passionate about keeping you cool and our experienced team is ready to solve any problem facing your unit. Here are some common reasons for an unresponsive air conditioner.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

When storms hit, it’s not uncommon for your home’s circuit breaker to switch off after a power surge. This is probably the most straightforward problem in the book, with the solution being simply flicking a switch. But if your air conditioner is constantly tripping the circuit breaker, there might be something more serious going on.

The Shut-off Switch Is Engaged

If your air conditioner has recently been serviced, it’s possible the technician may have forgotten to turn off the safety switch. Examine your unit for a shut-off switch, which will usually sit inside a metal box mounted on the wall. If you set your switch to “On” and the unit still doesn’t work, there is most likely another issue.

AC Needs A Reset

After a power outage, it’s possible an air conditioner may not restart correctly. Reset buttons are found on almost all units and are usually small and red. Ensure you unplug your unit for at least 30 seconds and then reconnect it before holding in the reset button for three seconds and release.

Faulty Thermostat

Your air conditioner’s thermostat is what tells it to turn off and on, so it’s possible there could be an issue. An indicator of a faulty thermostat might be a blank screen when you turn on the unit. If your thermostat is battery-powered, try replacing the batteries; alternatively, ensure your thermostat is not set to “heat”, or is set on the coolest setting. If these steps don’t work, contact us to arrange a fast and professional service.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

You can easily check for this problem by noticing if ice has developed on your unit. It is crucial that you address this immediately as a frozen coil can lead to further damage and expense. Get in touch with our team to schedule a callout.

Blown Fuse

Fuses blow as safety measures, and in air conditioners, a blown fuse is usually due to overheating. It’s always best to leave fuse replacement to the professionals to avoid causing further damage to your system.
